My second male portrait photography album, published in Taiwan market in 2018-May.
This book is designed by a Taiwanese Designer - Methyl Cheng (Owner of CH3 Design Studio).
Photography and graphic design, undoubtedly, are the most harmonious but the most conflicting match.
“PUZZLE 貳” is boldly designed and typeset in the first person from the photographer's viewpoint rather than in the third person as usual by the designer. This hardback book features its paper selection, fully adopting TAKEO paper. The public, gradually forgetting the touching moment by reading paper books, is estimated to be touched again through different lives of paper. For instance, the cover looks like leather by processing.
The translucent WASHI with patterns is selected for the chapter page. When covered with the chapter page, the photograph looks like the old photo or scratched traditional film in our memories.
Half-hidden is the text on the chapter page.
Only by turning the page can the introduction, echoing the photographs on both sides, be thoroughly comprehended, thereby arousing readers' deeper feelings and reflections. The text is written by the designer as well and is a part of design, bridging the photographs and stories within this collection.
Look back to the book title. Only a part of Chinese character “貳” is tooled in gold, showing “heart” in Chinese.
This book, accordingly, can also be read as “PUZZLE Heart”.
It is not merely a photography book collection; instead, it pieces together the journey of photographer's heart by both photographs and text.
攝影與平面設計無疑是最融洽卻也最易衝突的配對。
《PUZZLE貳》一書，設計者大膽僭越第三人稱旁觀視角，改以第一人稱視角顛覆常態的設計與排版手法。全精裝書均使用TAKEO紙張，期待透過不同紙張的生命，喚起被普世忘卻閱讀實體書的感動。
例如透過加工使書皮呈皮革質感；抑或單元頁，選用半透明的帶紋和紙襯於攝影作品，像是老相冊、或傳統底片的刮片效果，半遮半掩。而其文字必須經過翻頁，才能完整閱讀與兩側相片呼應的導文，加強讀者的閱讀感受與反思。
文字亦由設計師撰寫，也為設計的一部分，為串連照片與欲訴的故事而生，成為橋樑。回看書名「貳」字，僅局部燙出「心」。
這本書不單是攝影集，而是由相片拼湊起的攝影師的心路。
